Black Forest Smoothie

I drink a lot of protein shakes so if I don’t mix things up they can get pretty boring.  Being cherry season means that this is a great opportunity to relive my time in the Black Forest in Germany.  I experimented quite a bit with this recipe to recreate the flavour of the cake that captured my taste buds.

After washing, de-pitting, and freezing all my cherries, they were ready to use.

The ingredients needed are 1 Tbsp of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tsp cocoa nibs, 1/2 banana, and 1/2 C of cherries.

Then, of course a scoop of protein powder.  You can use plain or chocolate flavoured protein.  For the liquid, I use chocolate almond milk.

For additional ingredients, a cup of spinach blends nicely, as does 1 Tbsp of pure, dark chocolate chips (if you want to make it more dessert-like)

The secret to making this taste more like Black Forest cake is . . . .almond extract.  For some reason, this is a must.  You only need a few drops but it is a must in the smoothie.  Give it a try!  It might become one of your favourites as well.

Black Forest Smoothie

Ingredients

1.5 C chocolate almond milk

2 scoops protein powder

1/2 banana

1/2 C frozen cherries

1 Tbsp cocoa nibs

1 Tbsp cocoa powder

2-3 drops almond extract

1 C spinach (optional)

1 Tbsp dark chocolate chips (optional)

Directions

1.  Put all ingredients in a blender.

2.  Blend until smooth (about 45 seconds to 1 minute).

Protein 31.8 g
