Seasonal Foods: Summer



If you are looking to keep your meals exciting there are a few things you can do.  First, keep your eyes open at your local produce store for special items that they might bring in.  Second, make a trip to a local farm and see what they have.  Don’t be afraid to try new things.  If you don’t like it, no harm done.  If you do, you have something new to add to your meal plans.

Another great thing to do to include variety is follow the rainbow.  You may have heard this before.  Try and choose food items that are varied in colour.  It means better nutrition but it also means a meal that is more appealing to look at and consume.

The other great way to make your meals exciting is to shop by season.  Certain foods are best when they are in season.  Summer is a fantastic time to experience sweet, ripe fruits and vegetables.  These foods alone have a lot of flavour so unlike, autumn or winter foods, they require very little flavouring.  I am of the opinion that summers foods taste best when their natural flavours come through.

To get you started, here are some of the summer foods that are in season.  Because they are in season, and therefore more plentiful, you will find they are a bit easier on the pocket book too 😉
